Essential Camera Shot Types Every Filmmaker Should Know

Every film, no matter the budget, is built from a handful of core shot types. Knowing them helps you plan coverage and communicate with a crew.

Wide Shot (WS)

Establishes location and context. Shows the subject within their environment — useful for opening scenes or transitions.

Medium Shot (MS)

Frames a subject from roughly the waist up. It's the workhorse shot for dialogue, balancing body language with facial expression.

Close-Up (CU)

Fills the frame with a subject's face or a key detail, drawing attention to emotion or important objects.

Extreme Close-Up (ECU)

Isolates a small detail — eyes, hands, a ticking clock — for maximum intensity or symbolism.

Over-the-Shoulder (OTS)

Shot from behind one subject, framing another. Standard for conversations, it keeps both parties present without cutting back and forth constantly.

Point of View (POV)

Shows exactly what a character sees, putting the audience directly in their perspective.

Mixing these deliberately — rather than defaulting to medium shots throughout — is what gives a scene rhythm and visual interest.
